TISA is presented at the 17th OADF event

TISA contributed to the OADF discussion platform in its 17th edition presenting “TISA working towards TPEG for automated driving”. During this combined online and onsite event, which gathered over 100 experts, Matthias Unbehaun, Executive Director of TISA (in the picture), introduced TISA’s current activities.

Mr Unbehaun provided an overview of TISA’s latest activities in the domain of Autonomous Driving (AD) and underlined the work on TPEG3 for the provisioning of highly dynamic information to support automated driving through non-standard situations.

Unique cloud platform to communicate with intelligent traffic lights

 

19 April 2022 – Today, the Flanders Mobilidata program and the consortium of smart mobility industry partners, led by Be-Mobile, announce the implementation of a cloud platform that interconnects intelligent traffic lights in Flanders and enables information to be exchanged with road users.

 

This platform has been specially designed to enable new traffic applications in Flanders. External parties, such as navigation software providers, can (once they have passed an approval process) easily plug in their own applications to the platform. That makes Mobilidata an opportunity for both road users and application builders. The TLEX® cloud platform is the beating heart of the Mobilidata system and will eventually exchange millions of items of data every minute. The intensive data exchange at approximately 250 intelligent traffic lights in Flanders is a major step towards safer, smoother, more comfortable, and sustainable traffic in Flanders by the end of 2023.

 

In many places in Flanders, journeys are soon to become more pleasant, since waiting at an unnecessary red light will be avoided as much as possible at intelligent traffic lights. Not only motorised traffic, but also cyclists and pedestrians will be able to go from A to B more smoothly thanks to this technology. Moreover, emergency services on their way to an incident will not have to drive through an intelligent red light. They get a green light and priority over the other traffic so that they can get to their destination more quickly and safely. Finally, a smoother flow of traffic and a reduction in unnecessary stops and accelerations of cars and trucks will also have a positive impact on the environment. These are not pipe dreams: they are concrete plans from the Flemish Mobilidata program for 2022 and 2023.

Fast, reliable and integrated data exchange between road users and intelligent traffic lights is a crucial aspect of these plans. The TLEX® platform that has now been implemented, responds to this need. In autumn, several existing applications will be upgraded to support this exchange. Road users will then be able to receive relevant information and make informed decisions on sharing their data. To support data protection, the platform is currently undergoing a mandatory risk assessment. Only once this is complete and any ensuing additional measures have been taken will data be processed.

The TLEX® platform is produced by the Dutch company Monotch, which is specialised in connected mobility ans is rolling out the platform as a subcontractor of the Mobilidata consortium.

This is a group of private partners in the Mobilidata program, led by Be-Mobile. The current installation is a continuation of a system that already connects more than a thousand intelligent traffic lights in the Netherlands. It is an essential building block that is invisible to road users, but that they will be able to connect to later this year through various apps.

Despite all international research efforts in this field, there was only one country in the world that had actually rolled this out on a large scale to the day-to-day lives of road users: the Netherlands, via the Talking Traffic program. The fact that Flanders, thanks to the Mobilidata program, is now rolling out smart traffic lights and at the same time further developing the technology, is a world-class achievement we can be very proud of”.

The Mobilidata program was launched by the Flemish public authorities Agency for Roads and Traffic, Department of Mobility and Public Works, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Agency and the Department of Economy, Science, and Innovation. Committee meetings news

TISA Members gather in Brussels & online for the first time in 2022

The latest TISA Committee Meetings took place on 15 March 2022 as hybrid event. The meetings kicked off with the TISA Content & Service Provision Committee to review the open Use Case Proposals (UCPs). One new UCP was presented, suggesting to launch a Task Force to support deployment activities of TPEG2 Emergency Alerts and Warnings (EAW) services with best-practices and by facilitating liaisons with other organisations that provide other types of services based on the CAP protocol.

The Content & Service Committee was followed by the reporting of the Technical & Standardisation Committee’s, which included an update from the TMC Location Table Release Team and a report from the ISO Liaison Officer on TC204 activities relevant to TISA.

TISA members could then listen to a presentations of MappIs CTO Ankeet Bhat. MappIs is the leading geo-spatial data and technology company in India, providing services in over 200 countries. Next, TISA members were addressed by the new ERTICO-ITS Europe CEO Joost Vantomme, presenting an outlook of important activities under the ITS-Europe umbrella, pointing out areas of future collaboration between ERTICO and TISA.

The following Product Committee elected a new chair: Luka Krevs, who has been CTO of Realis for 5 years and has 20+ years of experience in IT with a strong expertise in ITS and C-ITS projects. The TISA Steering Board also welcomed Luka as part of the board.

The Committee meetings ended with a keynote presentation by Mike Tzamaloukas, General Manager Automotive at Amazon Web Services (AWS). Mike presented the IoT AWS Fleetwise product. Following Mikes presentation, TISA members raised interesting questions and discussed opportunities for a future collaboration between TISA and AWS IoT.

Reduce your carbon footprint by opting for the most efficient travel with TPEG2 applications

Mobility services such as car sharing, car rental, park and ride setups, public transport and micro-mobility on one hand, and the integration of different modes of transport by navigation systems on the other are now as important as they can be in our lives. This requires a cooperative transport infrastructure management, which in turn depends on the availability of precise information to direct it to travellers’ mobile devices from a central hub to guide them in using the most efficient modes and trajectories.

An optimal travel might involve driving to a train station in one’s private car and then taking the train to the final desired destination. This is what the TPEG2-RMR (Road and Multimodal Routes) application addresses by enabling the ability to provide service for road routes and multimodal routes including more than one transport mode and parking.

The standardised delivery made possible by TPEG2-RMR technology has the following potential benefits:

  • The possibility to select scenic or ECO routes
  • The most efficient use of the overall transport network hence not being limited to the road network
  • Travellers can save costs and time by selecting the most efficient route
  • Being able to access a harmonised in-vehicle navigation and traffic management system
  • Being able to personalise the information services provided according to own preferences.

A second TPEG2 application that covers all modes of public transport collectively including both inter- and intra-urban travel is TPEG2-PTS (Public Transport Information Service). This application is already being implemented by TISA Member Deutsche Bahn to inform travellers about unusual traffic situation in public transport using public radio. With TPEG2-PTS, efficient and language independent delivery of public transport updates are sent directly to travellers’ devices from service providers. PTS application is developed with three main use cases in mind:

  • Providing emergency alerts: A use case specifically relevant for broadcasting, sending push notifications about major disruptions to a large number of travellers possibly affected by the occurrence.
  • Providing both real-time and scheduled timetables: This use case is also relevant for broadcasting for the transport modalities to and from the event site when there are large events and gatherings. Moreover, a dedicated timetable request can also be defined and used in certain situations when there is a backchannel available.
  • Providing individual requests about trip information when there is an available backchannel.

It is worthwhile to mention that TPEG2-PTS focuses on providing core information on public transport and specific information regarding fares that are available on typical public transport apps is not in its scope.
