TISA at the 2022 World DAB Automotive

June 23, 2022

TISA partner bmt participated in the 2022 World DAB automotive conference organised in London in a hybrid format last month. Frank Strässle, Managing Director of bmt  presented “DAB content in the car” and focused on the broadcast of emergency warnings.

Informing travellers with alerts and warnings, such as using the DAB+ radio broadcasting system can be vital in times of emergency. Dr Strässle presented Germany’s trial using the TISA’s specification TPEG2-EAW (Emergency Alerts and Warnings).

Large-scale catastrophes or emergencies (widespread fires, toxic clouds, large-area flooding, severe weather) require quick and effective management of road traffic to avoid vehicles entering dangerous areas or uninformed drivers causing chaos on the roads. While many mobile apps and solutions exist, using a mobile phone while driving is an additional hazard for road traffic. TPEG2 Emergency Alerts & Warnings (EAW) provides an international standardized solution that integrates with line-fit and dash-mount navigation systems (as well as with mobile phones). This application was developed by TISA in collaboration with public emergency authorities.

‘It is important to ensure warnings reach everyone. We must ensure that we inform all travellers through the right alerts and warnings, via an efficient distribution channel, including those who may not speak the local language, nor be familiar with local geography and roads but at the same time not disturb them whilst driving,’ says Mr Strässle.

TPEG2-EAW provides an additional safe and non-intrusive means other than sirens, digital information systems, radio and TV and smartphone – apps.

BMT was founded as a subsidiary of Bavarian regulatory authority for new media (BLM) and Bavarian Broadcasting Corp (BR) and delivers projects in the field of digital broadcasting and media.
