Day 2 Recap - TISA Committee Meetings - 18 March, Madrid
Day two of the TISA Committee Meetings in Madrid continued to demonstrate the power of collaboration across the mobility ecosystem.
Kindly hosted by Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), the discussions brought together traffic authorities, ITS companies, and mobility data providers from Spain, across Europe, and the USA. What united everyone in the room was a shared ambition: building a future where traffic and travel information is 100% correct, 100% of the time.
This vision requires leadership, cooperation, and constant innovation. During the morning, TISA Task Forces shared progress on some of the building blocks that make reliable traffic information possible — including Location Referencing, TMC Standards, and Functional Road Classification (FRC).
We also heard inspiring perspectives from partners across research, public authorities, and industry:
- Hagen Geppert from GEWI presented practical approaches to reducing driver frustration by minimising the impact of work zones through better information.
- Annet van Veenndaal, NDW presented the TISGRADE project, highlighting the cooperation with TISA, for example on the RTTI 5-star Rating or the topic of Functional Road Classifications.
- Peter Lubrich from BASt elaborated on the importance of the feedback channels and presented proposals how to map them onto the TISA value chain.
- Michael L. Pack from the CATT Lab at the University of Maryland showcased how advanced data visualisation can turn complex mobility data into actionable insights.
- Zach Vander Laan of The Eastern Transportation Coalition presented the latest developments on traffic data cross-validation by the East Coast US states.
- Barry Koloway ended the day with an introduction to KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence from the University of Cyprus.
A visit to the DGT Traffic Management Center offered a powerful reminder of how critical real-time data and coordination are to keeping road networks safe and efficient.
Moments like these underline the importance of bringing the public and private sectors together to move the industry forward. Through shared standards, trusted partnerships, and continuous innovation, we are shaping the future of reliable traffic information.
