Sharing Global Road Safety Best Practices
TISA was pleased to be invited by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to present the work on the Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI) 5-Star Framework as the final webinar in FHWA’s Managing Disruptions webinar series on Wednesday 9th September 2026.
Representing TISA, Antoine van der Laan shared insights into the inner workings on the 5-Star rating, status of the related evaluation methodology and the framework review by stakeholders in different parts of the world, including Stellenbosch University and the University of Cyprus to the University of Maryland and Texas AM Transportation Institute.
Antoine stated: "All data sharing depends on one word: #trust, trust in the data, trust in the rating assigned to that data and trust in the entire tool chain. Who is this for? Road authorities, service providers, academics who are interested in standardised data and knowing quality of that data. This will ultimately improve information and the data quality for trips for all road users globally."
Looking ahead, Antoine highlighted, amongst other topics: "We continue developing and improving the FAQ, getting ready for new use cases on Variable Speed Limits and Conditional Access Restrictions, finalising the Evaluation Methodology and continuing to involve the academic sector."
Finally, a call to all stakeholders: TISA welcomes additional real-world pilots on using the 5-Star Rating Framework! If you are interested in joining the work, reach out to TISA.
