⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5-Star Rating Specification for Real-Time Traffic Information has now been Published!

The new RTTI 5-Star Rating Specification is a voluntary International framework that proposes relevant quality requirements for Traffic Data usage in Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI) services. With navigation systems nowadays being an integral part of driving and daily life, it's more important than ever for RTTI services to be accurate, complete and reliable.

This specification serves as an enabler to increase ITS Service Provider’s usage of Road Operators and Public Authorities’ traffic data. It stipulates the conditions under which ITS Service Providers will process and use the traffic data from Road Operators and Public Authorities in their RTTI services.

The launched specification focuses on three Priority Use Cases:

  • Static Speed Limits,
  • Road Closures, and
  • Road Works

The work ensures that all stakeholders aim at delivering accurate,
timely and reliable information to road users, thus supporting improved Road Safety and enhanced Traffic Management.

‘Announcing publication of the RTTI 5-Star Rating Specification, after close to three years of intensive efforts, is highly rewarding for TISA members. In addition to the hard work done, we can be very pleased with the inclusive way the results have been delivered, in a close cooperation between leading road authorities, city representatives and some of the world’s largest names on the service provider side’ stated TISA Executive Director Matthias Unbehaun.

Prior to the launch of the specification several steps were performed to verify and validate the specification version. Stellenbosch University from South Africa performed a stringent review, ensuring a sound approach, that state-of-the-art in ITS technology is considered scientific best practices are applied to the data analysis. TomTom and the Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) conducted a pilot during August and September 2025, which confirmed that the approach taken indeed delivers the intended benefits. Further pilots are currently in the planning.

We welcome all interested stakeholders to download the newly launched specification from the link below, and to join us in next steps of further evolving the work.

The document is published on the TISA website and version 1.0 of the specification can be downloaded here: https://tisa.org/wp-content/uploads/RTTI_5-Star-Rating_20251021_v1.0.pdf
