The RTTI 5-Star Rating specifications are cornerstones of an international quality assessment framework that establishes clear thresholds for evaluating the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of real-time traffic information made available by road operators to ITS service providers.

This first version 1.0 was developed over three years involving contributions and feedback from a broad range of stakeholders. It covers three priority use cases:

  • Static Speed Limits,
  • Road Works and
  • Road Closures.

More use cases will be covered in future revisions of that document.

The specification represents a consensus between the public sector and the ITS industry. A stringent review by our academic partner Stellenbosch University ensured that the document is sound, adheres to the state-of-the-art in the ITS industry and applies scientific best practices.

Implementation of the specification is voluntary, its purpose is to encourage global harmonization and a level playing field, aligning with EU and international best practices.

First pilots involving the Danish Road Directorate and TomTom showed clear benefits of the application of this framework for continuous improvement of traffic data quality. Feedback from more pilots planned for the coming months will be used for updating and further enhancing the specification.
