SIS50 - Building a resilient RTTI ecosystem: A 5-Star Approach to Quality Assessment
What an engaging discussion!!!
Special Interest Session (SIS 50) 'Building a resilient RTTI ecosystem: A 5-Star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Approach to Quality Assessment at ITS Seville 2025 brought together leading stakeholders on the topic.
All involved in the session agreed that sharing data across the RTTI value chain increases coverage and quality of the resulting end-user services, benefiting road users and reducing incidents on roads. For this to happen, long-term collaboration between public and private stakeholders, as well as clearly defined data exchange interfaces and robust quality metrics are essential.
The session moderated by Matthias Unbehaun, Executive Director of TISA - Traveller Information Services Association, brought together an impressive lineup of speakers:
- Thomas de Laine from Denmark’s Vejdirektoratet, highlighted a very important aspect of the 5-Star rating, which is knowing where to change things. Bringing up some of the main challenges they are facing, Thomas also underscored the importance of true private and public cooperation.
- Damaris Anna Gruber, and Annet van Veenendaal presented the work of the NAPCORE partnership and the member states RTTI Task Force, aiming to align member state views when collaborating with the private sector.
- Antoine van der Laan, TISA - Traveller Information Services Association, presented first approaches, challenges and outlook for the draft of the standard, which is currently under review.
Further insights were provided by the brilliant panelists, engaging in a lively discussion with the audience after the presentations:
- Rebeca Joaquín Graña from Google Maps, underlining the benefits of harmonised quality criteria and the advantages of standardisation in that context.
- Ralf-Peter Schäfer from TomTom, providing insights on how to approach the evaluation of the quality criteria.
- Christian Kleine from HERE Technologies, pointing out the importance of the collaboration between road operators and service providers and the mutual benefits.
While many organisations have already contributed to the work, TISA welcomes all additional stakeholders to get in contact with Stephanie Chaufton and/or Antoine van der Laan to find out more and to get involved.
To quote Antoine, "A bridge is only useful if it connects both sides", and "A standard only works if both providers and authorities walk across it and this standard is based on practical solutions that exist today and allows predictions that are better, using the infrastructure we already have".
The group is now working intensively on the assessment methodology and new priority use cases will be added soon to the 5-Star Rating Framework.
